Improving bathroom storage: solutions for smaller bathrooms

In this blog post I want to motivate you to perfect your bathroom storage! After all, the bathroom is often one of the smallest rooms in a household, yet it still has room for a lot of things.  However, to keep everything aesthetically pleasing and clear, it’s important to find the right storage methods to keep it tidy for the long term!

General rules for organising your bathroom

Bathroom organisation always starts with sorting. So unpack all your drawers and shelves, clear everything off the edge of the tap and bath and pile up all the clutter on the bathroom floor!

Sorting is a step not to be missed because it’s when you’re confronted with how much your items that you thought were fewer at first have actually grown over the years.

Get rid of anything that’s past its expiry date, and get rid of things you’ll never use, like a perfume you don’t really like the smell of or an unopened face cream you’ll never use.

Give these as gifts to someone who will be happy to use them, so you can avoid wastage. It’s also time to pass on items that you don’t really know what they are for yet you’ve treasured for years. This could be the replaceable head of a hairdryer or any little knick-knacks you’ve stashed away for some reason.

When sorting, also create categories of the items you want to keep! Pack oral care products separately, have a separate category for face and body care, put hair care stuff separately, perfumes, intimate hygiene and so on. The goal is to see what you have to spread out in drawers and on shelves.

When it comes to bathroom storage, it’s important to pack the categories you create in a logical way. Items you use daily should be at hand, for example in a drawer under the tap, while those you use less frequently can be safely moved to a higher shelf. Also, one thing you should make sure you don’t store unnecessary items on the edge of the tap! Only soap, toothbrushes and toothpaste should stay here. I also recommend that you place the latter on a tray so that you can move everything at once when cleaning.

Bathroom storage in a space crunch

Feeling small in your bathroom? Or have limited storage options? The following are some ideas to help you make the most of your bathroom storage.

  1. Don’t store extra stuff

A smaller bathroom is no place to squeeze in space for supplies. Don’t store your extra soap and shower gel here, instead, organise them into a multi-purpose storage unit and store them elsewhere in your home. Alternatively, you can shop only when you run out of these things.

  1. Move some things elsewhere

If you have limited storage space in your bathroom, keep only the things that you use regularly in drawers or on shelves. Make-up or facial products, for example, should be kept separate in their own make-up bin.

That way you can move them around in one, so you can keep them in another room and optionally take them with you to the bathroom when you’re getting ready.

The same goes for towels. They take up a lot of space, while it’s not so important to store them here. Feel free to throw them in your closet, especially the larger, bath towels. Use the cloth folding technique for aesthetic and space-saving storage! Also, you don’t necessarily need to store cleaning products here if you have extra space under the kitchen tap, for example. Think about the things you use weekly or less frequently and feel free to move them to another room in your home to keep bathroom storage effective!

  1. Wall-mounted solutions

If you have the option, put some things on the wall, as this will avoid a feeling of clutter in a smaller bathroom. For example, a smaller wall-mounted toilet paper holder is a better option than a toilet paper rack that takes up more space. In this case, you should only keep 1-2 spare rolls close to the toilet. You can do this aesthetically in a toilet paper storage box. Shower gel can also be stored in a wall-mounted holder, and if you don’t have a drawer for the hairdryer, you can also mount it on the wall.

Bathroom storage when space is limited

If your problem isn’t that you have a small bathroom area, but that you’re short on storage space or your drawers and shelves are difficult to organise in terms of storage technology because of their design, a storage rack on wheels could be a good solution for you. After all, you can make extensive use of such a storage unit and it will fit into most bathrooms thanks to its clean, minimalist look. Store a hairdryer, towels or anything else you use in the bathroom that won’t fit in the bathroom cabinet.

With extra organizers, you can even store multiple categories of items aesthetically. The advantage is that you can roll it anywhere during cleaning due to its mobility.

In addition, a mirrored shelf can solve your problem. Replace the plain mirror above the sink with this version and you’ll have extra storage space thanks to the shelves!

Bathroom storage: practical organisers for the bathroom

To make your bathroom storage the most practical, use organizers! However, for an aesthetically pleasing system, always measure drawers and shelves before installing any storage!

EcoWood’s wooden drawer organizers, for example, make it very easy to separate the categories in your drawer. You can choose from several sizes and provide aesthetic storage for small items such as hair ties or buckles. However, if you don’t like this natural look or it’s less suited to your bathroom furniture, go for a clear makeup drawer organizer.

For tall shelves, duplicating organizers is a great solution to maximize vertical space for storage. You can do this with either a tiered cosmetics organiser or a two-tiered rotating tray, which can hold a plethora of creams and other cleaning tools. However, if they’re too tall or you’re looking for a simpler option, a plain rotating tray can go a long way to making sure you have easy access to your stuff and don’t have to search through the end of the shelf creating chaos.

Other accessories for an aesthetic look

After a thorough sorting and organising, even the smallest bathroom becomes a much cleaner space that feels good to walk into. However, to make the most of the aesthetics, I recommend a few accessories. In other words, products that don’t directly contribute to the design of the system, but which can make the space look more uncluttered thanks to their uniformity. And their outstanding functionality makes everyday life easier.

Such accessories include an automatic soap dispenser if you prefer a modern style, or a marble liquid soap dispenser if you prefer a more elegant look. After all, they look much nicer on the edge of the tap than liquid soap in a plastic box.

A big favourite of many, a silicone toilet brush is also an accessory that makes the bathroom look much more harmonious compared to a plastic version. However, as well as being aesthetically pleasing, it is also a particularly useful tool, as it is much more hygienic to use than its brush-headed counterparts.

Alongside these, choose a pad holder box for aesthetic storage of intimate hygiene products, or a modern wet wipe holder so that the harmony isn’t spoilt by the plastic bag version.

Remember, you can get the most out of a small bathroom, you just need to apply the home organisation trinity: sort, categorise, organise. And handy organisers and bathroom accessories can help you enjoy your evening bubble bath or facial routine free from visual clutter!
